We invest in the latest technologies that give us the design edge for custom jewelry in Kansas City.
Our most recent investment in jewelry technology is a new Solidscape 3z Pro 3D printer. This printer allows us to go from 3D design to finished item more accurately and efficiently.
A 3D printer allows us to “print” a wax version of the jewelry item we are creating. It does this by extruding wax, a thin layer at a time. Layer upon layer, until the entire item is printed. Basically, we print wax parts that are ready for casting!
Karen creates a design in our 3D software and then prints the job with wax on the 3z Pro. We then take the wax version of the item and create a mold. We pour metal into the mold to create the jewelry item and our jewelers do the finishing.
One of the things that’s great about the new Solidscape 3z Pro is that it produces extremely smooth wax parts. It’s also much more precise and can create incredibly intricate designs and geometries. This opens up an entirely new level of creativity and detail options for Karen and our customers!

In April, we had a new sign installed on the front of our building in the College Village Shopping Center and blogged about it. In August, we were also able to update our monument sign at the corner of 119th and Quivira.
This is the second sign that Luminous Neon Inc. has created and installed for us recently. We think they do a great job and we are really happy with the results.
It was definitely time to update our corner sign. The previous sign had been there for more than 20 years. It was starting to rust! And we needed to do some major brick work as well.
We installed LED lighting that lights the sign with more intensity, making it easier to see from the street while also saving energy.
Next time you stop by, let us know if you noticed our new sign on the corner of College and Quivira!
August 18th was the first day back to school for our girls. After a summer of softball, swimming and fishing, they were excited for their first day adventure and getting to see their friends.
It’s been amazing to watch them grow into young ladies. It seems like yesterday we were changing diapers… wait that WAS yesterday, but just with our youngest, Tallia, who is 20 months old.
Although the girls going back to school is bittersweet, Karen has more time to create beautiful things. We look forward to seeing the girls in the store when they finish with their school day and having them share with us what they’ve learned.
Our friends and clients who visit the store are used to seeing the girls and have noticed how quickly they are growing. Next time you stop in, be sure to say hi!
Sapphire is the birthstone for September. We have beautiful sapphire jewelry for you or that special someone. Come in to House of Diamonds to see our selection, or talk to Karen about creating a custom item with a sapphire as the focal point.
The word sapphirecomes from several ancient languages: the Arabic safir, the Latin sapphirus (meaning blue), and the Greek word sappheirosfor the island of Sappherine in the Arabian Sea where sapphires were found in ancient Grecian times. In the Middle Ages, Sapphire was believed to protect those close to you from envy and harm. It also represented loyalty and trust.
The biggest source of sapphires world-wide is Australia, especially New South Wales and Queensland.
Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark green or violet blue, as well as various shades of pure blue. The most prized colors are a medium to medium dark blue or slightly violet blue.
Sapphire is a variety of the gem species corundum and occurs in all colors of the rainbow. Pink, purple, green, orange, or yellow corundum are known by their color (pink sapphire, green sapphire).

We love it when we can do business with our customers. Jason Terry with Blue Gurus is a perfect example of that. Jason bought his wife’s engagement ring from us. When Gene heard that Blue Gurus does website design, he wanted to know more. And soon after that conversation, Blue Gurus was designing a new website for House of Diamonds. That was back in 2009.
Since then, Jason has done another new website for us to make it mobile friendly. And he also convinced us that we needed to start telling our stories online. Not marketing pieces… but real stories about our team, our clients and our family.
We’ve noticed an awareness that we’ve never had before on our web and social media. We get positive feedback from customers on a regular basis. We took a break over the holiday months in 2015, but otherwise, we’ve been working with Blue Gurus for more than a year on our storytelling. Our industry is stagnant right now. We aren’t doing any other form of advertising at the present time, but we continue to grow so we know it’s working.
Having Jason as a partner is almost like having him on staff. He’s gotten to know our team, our process, and what brings people back to House of Diamonds. We love the fact that he comes on site to help us with our strategy and social efforts. He’s our accountability partner.
